Musical drama, ‘A Slave Story’ hits the National Theatre, August 1-3

slave story‘A Slave’s Story’, a musical drama written by young Ghanaian playwright Yaw Asiyama, and performed by K. Vision theatre group from England, will be staged at the National Theatre in Accra from Wednesday August 1 to Friday 3. A triumphant story of survival spanning over 250 years, it begins with the abduction of Araba, who together with a group of people from her village, were captured, taken across the Atlantic and sold into bondage, and ends, several generations later with Arabella. And it comes to the stage in Ghana for the first time after a successful run in the UK!   A journey of ruthless challenges, this powerful “masterpiece” is told in verse, in rich poetic language, and embraced by beautiful, original and timeless music. 250 years later, Araba’s descendants could well be walking amongst us. It begins in 1781. A young African girl, Araba, on the farm with the rest of her village, is abducted along with her fiancé and many of her fellow villagers. A friend of the village is responsible for their capture and is cursed by Araba. “There will never be happiness in your family and amongst your descendants till there is joy in mine,” she says as she’s being hauled away.   Praised by no less a person than the Rev. Jesse Jackson, London’s theatreland – West End – producer Jack Hylton and the BBC, the production has recently toured southern England, and will make a showing at this year’s Panafest before it hits the National Theatre.   Leading a crew and cast of eight is Georgina Ampaabeng Mainoo, formerly of the Ghana National Theatre. She is currently the CEO of K. Vision Productions, a multimedia production company based in the UK, and they intend for the show to bring some exciting thrills to theatre in Ghana.]]>
