Ghana Television (GTV) may be the national broadcaster for Ghana but in spite of priding itself as the only station with nationwide coverage, when it came to the Globa Radio and Television (RTP) Awards over the weekend, the station couldn’t make any gains with its nationwide coverage. TV host, Gifty Anti was the only one from the station that won an award during the ceremony which is decided by public voting.
Gifty bagged the TV Morning Show host of the Year and Television Female Presenter of the Year. When she came on stage to pick up her first award she appeared with colleagues from GTV and explained that they weren’t allowed to advertise their nominations on their station for their viewers to vote for them, unlike most of the other stations did. When she came back for the second award she said: “I dedicate this award to two hard working ladies, my sisters who are causing trouble for me on air, Delay and Valentina”.
There were no awards for any of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) radio stations either. So did the policies of the GBC hold them back from winning awards or have they lost touch with the needs of readers and viewers?
